Bač Fortress: A Journey Through Serbia’s Medieval Heritage

A Brief History of Bač Fortress

Bač Fortress, one of the oldest and best-preserved medieval fortresses in Vojvodina, was built in the first half of the 14th century during the reign of Hungarian King Charles Robert. Located on the banks of the Mostonga River, it served as a strategic defense point against Ottoman invasions.

Constructed in a Gothic architectural style, the fortress is characterized by its quadrilateral tower, which still dominates the landscape. Despite suffering damage during the Ottoman period, many of its original elements remain well-preserved to this day.

One night, while patrolling the walls, he saw the ghostly figure of a woman in white wandering the ramparts. Believing it to be the spirit of his beloved, who had perished during a previous siege, Ladislav followed the figure, but she vanished into thin air.
