Plavi Horizonti Beach, Montenegro

Montenegro’s coastline offers something for everyone—from bustling beaches in Budva to hidden coves in the Bay of Kotor. But there’s one spot that has, for decades, been considered the epitome of a perfect summer escape: Plavi Horizonti. Tucked away in a quiet bay between Tivat and the Luštica Peninsula, this beach is worth the drive—no matter where you’re staying on the coast.

Natural Beauty and Unique Features of Plavi Horizonti

It’s rare to find such a perfect harmony of sea, pine trees, and soft sand as you do at Plavi Horizonti. This crescent-shaped beach features natural dark sand underfoot and is surrounded by olive groves and dense pine forest that provides welcome natural shade—a true rarity on a coastline where rocky and pebbly beaches dominate.

One of the beach’s standout features is its exceptionally shallow water, which extends up to 20 meters from the shore. The gradual and safe entry with no sudden drop-offs makes it ideal for families with young children. The sea here is remarkably clean and calm, with shades of turquoise and deep blue shimmering in the sunlight. You might feel a few small pebbles underfoot when entering the water, so water shoes are a good idea for extra comfort.

Plavi Horizonti has earned the prestigious Blue Flag award multiple times—an international certification given to Europe’s cleanest and best-maintained beaches. Alongside its natural beauty, the beach also offers everything visitors might need: beach bars, a restaurant, showers, loungers, and umbrellas. Prices are moderate, and the vibe is relaxed and family-friendly. While it can get crowded during peak summer months, the off-season brings a peaceful atmosphere that’s hard to find right by the sea.

Located in the Pržno Bay on the Luštica Peninsula, Plavi Horizonti is just a 20-minute drive from Tivat. Access is easy by car, with a large paid parking lot (around €1 per hour). If you’re coming without a vehicle, be aware there’s a short walking trail to reach the beach.

A Bit of History – A Place Filled with Memories

Plavi Horizonti is more than just a beautiful beach—it has a story. Back in 1972, the “Plavi Horizont” hotel opened here, at the time one of the largest and most modern resorts on the Montenegrin coast. With over 600 beds, a full campground, and a technologically advanced kitchen, it became a symbol of summer vacations for working-class families from the former Yugoslavia.

What made the hotel truly special was its beachfront — soft sand and an incredibly gentle sea incline that allowed visitors to walk far out into the water without going beyond their depth. It’s no surprise that many older visitors feel a deep nostalgic connection to this place.

Though the hotel closed more than a decade ago, in 2010 the entire complex was bought by an international company planning to develop a luxury resort. While the hotel is long gone, the beach remains—and today, perhaps more than ever, it’s beloved by all generations.
